Job description

The University of York’s Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) wish to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop new methods to investigate the sources of secondary organic aerosols in three polluted megacities. The post is full time (with flexibility if required) and fixed-term for a period of up to 36 months and will be available from 1st June 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

WACL is the largest dedicated atmospheric chemistry facility in the UK. Home to more than 65 researchers with interests in all aspects of atmospheric chemistry, WACL supports an exceptional research environment, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful academic departments at York, placed in the top ten UK for Research Power by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercise (REF). In urban areas, particulate matter is one of the most important pollutants for human health effects, leading to increases in respiratory diseases and premature mortality. You will develop new high-resolution mass spectrometry methods to analyse the detailed composition of organic aerosol in urban areas. Aerosol samples will be collected during a field campaign at the NERC Honor Oak research station (London) and combined with historical data from Beijing and Delhi. State-of-the-art machine learning approaches will be used to explore the factors that control the sources and transformation of organic aerosols.

This post will primarily be based in WACL, with a two month knowledge exchange placement within the Air Quality group at the UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Where appropriate you would be expected to provide guidance to other researchers in atmospheric chemistry including PhD students and staff.

You will also be responsible for:

  • conducting individual and collaborative research projects
  • the writing and publication of quality manuscripts, as well as delivering presentations at conferences or exhibiting work at other events
  • contributing to the preparation of research proposals and applications to external bodies

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Undergraduate degree in any STEM discipline and have a PhD in Atmospheric Science or related field or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of aerosol science and urban air quality
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media including publication in journals and delivery of presentations at conferences or exhibiting work at other events
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines, exhibiting self-initiative
  • Highly motivated and professional work ethic, with commitment to high quality research, a collaborative ethos and a willingness to proactively support colleagues and students
