Job description

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) and the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) invite applications for a post-doctoral Research Fellow (RF) to work on an NRF-funded project to evaluate and better quantify the potential for volcanic eruption and associated hazards at Changbaishan volcano, on the border of the People’s Republic of China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea).

The main tasks that the RF will lead are:
1) Gathering data and constructing a Bayesian event tree for Changbaishan based on existing data and literature (i.e. prior probabilities) and then updating the tree as new data are provided through the course of the project;
2) Carrying out probabilistic hazard modelling for potential future eruption scenarios.

The RF will also support detailed fieldwork and stratigraphic studies around Changbaishan, to be led by the China Earthquake Administration, with a focus on past large and explosive eruptions.

The successful candidate will join the growing volcanic hazard and risk group at EOS/ASE and work in a vibrant, international scientific department. Candidates with prior experience in physical volcanology, volcanic hazard, risk assessment and/or geo-statistical studies are preferred. Fluency in Mandarin would be a bonus. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

The Fellow will collaborate with Asst. Prof. Susanna Jenkins, the volcano group in EOS/ASE and colleagues at the Chinese Earthquake Administration in Beijing. The Fellow is expected to publish the scientific outcomes of their research in international peer-reviewed journals, actively participate in the various volcanology-related education and outreach activities of the group, and be involved in the mentoring of EOS PhD students.

Requirements:

  • PhD in physical volcanology, hazard and risk, geo-statistical studies or equivalent.
  • Evidence of innovation and/or research publications in the areas of physical volcanology, volcanic hazards and risk or statistics.
  • Enthusiasm, good team work and collaboration, good English oral and written communication skills, and an ability to conduct independent research.
  • Mandarin oral and written communication skills preferable, but not required.

How to apply

Application Procedure:

Interested applicants are invited to submit a full CV, and a cover letter outlining your interest and fit for the post to ase_humanresources@ntu.edu.sg indicating Research Fellow – Volcanic Hazard Assessment. CVs should include academic qualifications, publication list, and names and contact details of two referees.

The position will close when a suitable candidate has been identified.
Address any questions to Assistant Professor Susanna Jenkins (susanna.jenkins@ntu.edu.sg).
We regret that only successful candidates will be informed.
