The working group Geohydromodelling at the Institute for Geosciences of the Christian-Albrechts- University Kiel invites applications for the following position, which is to be filled 01.07.2019 or later:

Numerical simulation of geological heat storage systems

Our profile
The research area of the working group Geohydromodelling is modelling and numerical simulation of flow and reactive transport processes in single and multi-phase systems in the subsurface as well as simulation of geothermal heat flow and geomechanical effects. Application areas are e.g. contaminated ground water sites, subsurface storage of greenhouse gases, geothermal energy and storage of renewable energy in geologic reservoirs. For this, the required numerical codes are developed and applied in real case studies. The working group participates in national research programs, funded by the German Research Foundation or the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, but is also involved in projects with industry.

Your profile
You have a university degree in geosciences, physics, geophysics, mathematics or engineering sciences. You are interested in working on geoscientific questions and have a basic knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences. You have ideally experience in developing and applying scientific software as well as knowledge on flow- and heat transport processes in the subsurface.

Your tasks
The position is part of the research project ANGUS, financed by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, and investigates employment options and induced effects for seasonal subsurface heat storage. Storage capacities, storage rates, effects of cyclic operation as well as geologic location are investigated. Using numerical process simulations and realistic settings, high temperature storage in connection to the energy grids will be investigated for combined heat and power plants.

Our Offer
The position is available starting 01.07.2019 until 31.12.2020. Salary will be according to TV-L E13. Both Postdoctoral scientists as well as PhD candidates are encouraged to apply, as the opportunity for obtaining a PhD or for scientific qualification is offered. The regular weekly working hours correspond to 66% (currently 25.8 hours) in case of a PhD student, in case of a Postdoctoral scientist full time employment is offered.
