Job description

The Computational Science and Engineering Group, Center for Mathematical Science and Advanced Technology (MAT), Research Institute for Value-Added-Information Generation (VAiG), JAMSTEC provides a nurturing environment for development work with applications to both software and research relating to social and scientific issues that fall within the remit of the priority project “Cross-Ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP)” (Project period: FY2018-FY2022) for building innovative survey technology for enhancing the performance of deep-sea resources, funded by the Cabinet Office (CAO). We invite Project Scientist, Project Technical Scientist or Project Engineer with sufficient work experience to apply for these positions. Applicants should be interested in developing numerical models to optimize systems for mining and rifting mud from the seafloor.

The successful applicant will be expected to perform the following tasks:
1) Development of the 3D numerical simulation of the slurry transportation with a riser pipe.
2) Validation and improvement of the non-Newtonian fluid simulation model with an ocean and laboratory slurry experiments conducted by other SIP members.

Project Scientist:
To contribute to the project, a Project Scientist is expected to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.

Project Technical Scientist:
To contribute to the project, a Project Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

Project Engineer:
To contribute to the project, a Project Engineer is expected to manage, improve and advance the infrastructure. Establishment of technology based on a background of general technical knowledge such as information system, improvement of technical management functions is also inclusive.

Project Scientist/Project Technical Scientist: Discretionary labor system
Project Engineer: 9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)

[Contract Period]
August 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020. (Annual renewal up to 4 fiscal years)

*Appointment date is negotiable.

*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year. The contract period can is expected to be renewed annually but the total contract period is for a maximum of 4 fiscal years (until March 31, 2023), depending on the progress of this research project and the performance of the employee.

*The contract period will end at the conclusion of this funding.

*In accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during the employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.

*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.

d) Publications (achievements) list including title of the thesis (1 copy) *Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications (1 copy).
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy). *If you have not been awarded any, include “none” in the list.
f) 2 representative publications (1 copy).
g) 2 letters of recommendation from two senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should send the letter to JAMSTEC directly by POST or E-mail. In the case of E-mail, a signed letter in PDF format should be attached. The applicant’s name should be specified on the envelope or in the title of the E-mail. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.

Project Engineer:
a) A CV (1 copy). Valid E-mail and home addresses must be provided. Also include details of your professional experiences in the CV. *Please specify that you are applying for the “Project Engineer” position.

(2) Submission:

Applicants will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview. Currently, interviews are scheduled in July, 2019. The successful applicant is expected to join us on August 1, 2019.
