The atmospheric chemistry group at Bayreuth University explores exchange processes between the atmosphere and the Earth’s ecosystems. At this interface we want to understand relevant emission mechanisms as well as atmospheric photooxidation that leads to the formation of ozone and aerosol, hence impacts air quality and climate. Living in the Anthropocene, we study the potential of the increasing influence of human activity to alter natural exchange processes between atmosphere and the Earth surface.

Job description

Especially in forested areas a large production of secondary organic aerosol has been observed which is believed to be formed by the oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC). We aim to explore this mechanism coupling traditional with novel methods. Observations in forest air as well as controlled studies in reaction chambers will aid to elucidate important details within the oxidation chemistry of BVOC.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our growing team in an interdisciplinary working environment. Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry, environmental sciences or a related field before starting the PhD. Good experimental skills are required for developing and running complex instruments in atmospheric field studies and laboratory experiments. Basic knowledge in data analysis, script writing and programming would be a benefit.
