The key missions of ECGS encompass fundamental research activities in solid earth sciences, with a particular focus on the disciplines of seismology and satellite geodesy, as well as seismological and geodetic observatory missions. In this framework, ECGS operates seismic and geodetic networks in Luxembourg and the Virunga Volcanic Province in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the Walferdange Underground Laboratory for Geodynamics.

Job description

In the context of the expansion of its activities, the European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology (ECGS) invites applications for a technical engineer appointment in the area of geophysical network operations.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will consist in the maintenance and operation of seismic and GPS/GNSS stations in the laboratory (testing etc.) and in the field; hardware and software configurations; remote management of stations and communication with local station operators; management of the recorded data and related metadata; documentation of networks status and changes; technical support of the scientists; and data quality control with and maintenance of the related software packages SeisComP3, Bernese, etc.

The position involves field work in Luxembourg and potentially abroad, partly in difficult conditions. For this reason, existing field work experience is a strong asset. All candidates applying for this position should be motivated to work in an interdisciplinary and international framework. Willingness to acquaint with new technologies, programming languages and electronic systems is required. In the frame of routine monitoring activities, the willingness to acquaint with basic concepts of routine data analyst tasks and to assist in the design of new software modules is appreciated.

Qualifications: We seek an outstanding individual holding a bachelor degree (or equivalent) in electronic engineering, informatics or a related field. Excellent knowledge of electronic systems and communication networks is mandatory. Good IT (unix based systems, linux) and programming skills are required (shell scripts, C, and/or other languages). Fluency in English as well as an adequate level of French and/or German are a necessity. A category B driver’s license is required for the position.

Terms of employment: The successful candidate will be offered full-time permanent position, subject to a 6 months probationary period. Work location will be Walferdange, Luxembourg. The position involves a competitive salary package.
