The Baltic Sea Centre consists of a unique combination of experts and communicators who collaborate with a wide network of marine scientists to improve knowledge about the Baltic Sea and help society handle its marine environmental problems. We have a very active modelling group working on a wide range of environmental problems such as eutrophication, overfishing and contamination, and all of these in the perspective of climate change. Our model developments are done in close collaboration with expert scientists both at Stockholm University departments and internationally. We support HELCOM with scientific advice and services through the Baltic Nest Institute.

We are looking for a scientist to be part of a growing team of researchers exploring the role of the coastal zone in the functioning of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The coastal zone is highly productive, rich in biodiversity and habitat complexity, and provides valuable ecosystem services. At the same time, however, it is highly sensitive to human pressures and it is also in the coastal zone where human pressures are most readily observed. Nevertheless, how biogeochemical processes and the mechanisms maintaining biodiversity in the coastal zone are interlinked is a timely and evolving research field.
This novel modelling work will combine the strong modelling competence at the Baltic Sea Centre (linking ecology, economy and management in decision support systems to e.g. Helcom) with the unique data set and process knowledge gained during the full-scale remediation project “Living coast” in Björnöfjärden in the Stockholm Archipelago (Rydin et al. 2017, Rydin & Kumblad 2019; BalticSea2020). In the Living coast project both measures to reduce nutrient inputs from the catchment as well as an aluminum treatment of the sediments to retain phosphorus were implemented causing significant changes in the bay that was followed by an intensive and extensive monitoring of the state of the bay (e.g. water chemistry, anoxic bottoms, plankton, vegetation, fish, benthic fauna).
The project aim is to develop a numerical model that simulates physical and biogeochemical processes of coastal seas. Such a model is important to better understand coastal ecosystem dynamics under severe eutrophication, but also to predict improvements in water quality as well as the ecosystem recovery when nutrient loads decline due to actions. The successful candidate will implement an existing physical-biogeochemical model to a semi-enclosed coastal bay of the Baltic Sea, test the model performance, and make necessary new developments to reproduce and understand the monitored response of the bay to different remediation measures.
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and personality.
Specific qualifications required to be considered as a candidate for employment include at least a PhD within the subject area of the position (e.g. oceanography, biogeochemistry or ecology) and excellence in numerical modelling. The successful candidate should have good programming skills in at least one classic language (C, C++, FORTRAN, or similar) since our model is coded in FORTRAN and should have excellent writing and communication skills in English. Skills in data processing tools as MatLab or R and experience in coastal oceanography/ecology in particular in phosphorus turnover in aquatic systems are merits.
We are looking for a person with a genuine interest:
- to implement, verify and validate physical-biogeochemical model to the Björnöfjärden
- to identify and implement necessary improvements in model parameterizations
- to perform scenario simulations
- to describe modelling results in a policy relevant context
- to publish scientific papers and reports.
Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for one year, with the possibility of extension for one additional year. Start date as per agreement.
