CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas. Within this context, CyI in cooperation with Advanced Partners Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (Germany), University of Helsinki (Finland) and Laboratory for Sciences of the Climate and the Environment (CEA, France), are establishing the “Eastern Mediterranean Middle East – Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre of Excellence” (EMME-CARE), under Horizon 2020 – TEAMING Grant no. 856612.

Under the Supervision of the EMME-CARE Director, the successful candidate(s) will be expected to further develop EMME-CARE’s research and technical expertise on regional atmospheric and chemistry modelling, emphasizing on the Eastern Mediterranean – Middle East – North Africa, and with particular focus on contributing to activities related to the emission inventories compilation (at national level and spatialized on a grid) and assessment for scientific and policy-oriented applications.
The research will be carried out within the Impact & Policy Department of the EMME-CARE Centre-of-Excellence and will consist of monitoring, reporting, verification as well as scenarios and projections of national emissions for both gaseous pollutants and greenhouse gases of the country’s sectors as required by EU directives and international standards. Training (methodologies and tools) by expert European organizations and networking with local and regional stakeholders will be provided and are anticipated to be enriched by the candidate(s), thus requiring strong communication and technical potential. Inventories compilation in adherence with (inter)national requirements is expected to take place in close cooperation with relevant competent Authorities in Cyprus, thus requiring the candidate(s) to have close interaction and collaboration with public-sector officials and policy-makers.
The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed-term period, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and EMME-CARE and Institute needs.

  • Monitor, verify, report and compile national emission inventories for GHGs and propose methodologies for scenario analysis in compliance with and adherence to European and national regulations and directives
  • Contribute to research related to current and projected GHG and air pollutants emissions, atmospheric concentrations and impact on climate
  • Publish and communicate the research output and implications at different levels, including academic, public and policy related
  • Actively pursue regional and international networking, especially in relation to emission inventory development and air quality modelling communities such as CAMS, TFEIP, EU WG, FAIRMODE activities, JRC community etc.

  • Familiarity with the application of Emission Inventories in Atmosphere and Chemistry modelling, sectoral analysis and Uncertainty Assessment
  • Good knowledge of IT tools such as Excel, Access, and GIS
  • Good knowledge of Statistical Tools
  • Good knowledge of reporting formats such as CRF and NRF
  • Good understanding of emissions from subsectors such as livestock and cultures for agricultural applications
  • Familiarity with policies and regulations for air quality and national emissions and with Best Available Technologies for different emission sectors
  • Communication of emission and air quality results to (and active engagement with) competent authorities and policy-makers
