The School of Earth Sciences, Energy and Environment has 12 faculty members with teaching and research fields that include tectonics and structural geology, geophysics, seismology, petroleum geology and basin analysis, petrology and ore deposits, sedimentology and stratigraphy, geochemistry, volcanology, hydrology, surficial processes and sustainable development. We have around 50 students in our undergraduate career and are working on starting a master’s program for spring 2021.
The School of Earth Sciences, Energy and Environment at Yachay Tech University (Ecuador) invites applicants for a faculty position as the dean of the School of Earth Sciences, Energy and Environment. The expected start date is latest May 1, 2020. We seek applicants with a commitment to leadership, teaching, and research.
The candidate should have a PhD in geology/geophysics/environment or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a permanent position in academia, including teaching and research. The candidate should show a strong publication record and evidence of teaching experience. Previous experience in an administrative leadership role is seen positive.
The candidate will be expected to establish a research program in their area of specialization as well as to participate in teaching and student advising activities within the School. The main duties include the everyday management of the school, participation in the academic council, fostering democratic decision-making processes within the faculty, conducting yearly evaluations of the faculty, etc. The courses to be taught will depend on the candidate’s expertise. Classes are taught using the block system (e.g., https://www.coloradocollege.edu/basics/blockplan/). Most of the teaching duties will be carried out in English, and Spanish is the working language at Yachay Tech; therefore, as the dean, the candidate should be fluent in both English and Spanish.
- Managing the School of Earth Sciences, Energy and Environment
- Participating in the Academic Council with other Deans and University Authorities to guarantee the functioning of the university
- Teach courses related to the applicant’s specialty
- Establish an active research program
- Seek external research funding
- Mentor undergraduate students’ research projects

The pre-selected candidates will be interviewed (by videoconference) or may be invited to visit Yachay Tech University to deliver a seminar talk and interact with researchers from the School of Earth Sciences, Energy and Environment.
