Job description

We propose a challenging and stimulating position for a dynamic researcher in the field of forest modelling and terrestrial carbon fluxes. In particular, we use the Carbon Budget Model (CBM-CFS), a forest inventory-based model capable to represent the impact of human-induced and natural disturbances on the dynamics of the various carbon pools. The expected work is robustly rooted in science and highly policy-relevant.
The envisaged technical work will include:

  • forest modelling aimed at: (i) helping verifying GHG inventories by Members States; (ii) supporting DG CLIMA on implementing LULUCF Regulation 2018/841; (iii) exploring scenarios of the overall forest climate change mitigation potential in the EU; (iv) supporting the development of a JRC-based biomass and GHG integrated modelling framework.
  • Produce scientific publications and science for policy briefs.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have a PhD in forestry, agriculture, environmental science, or related field (or a University degree and 5 years of experience after the university degree giving access to doctoral studies) and strong motivation to work in the interface between science and policy.
Research experience in forest modeling and in the analysis of forest resources/carbon cycle is required. A basic knowledge of Computer programming languages and of IPCC methods for estimating LULUCF GHG emissions and removals is an asset. A general knowledge of the EU LULUCF legislation and related EU policies will be considered as an advantage.
The candidate should have a committed, well-organized and dynamic personality, open to explore new fields and work in a team.
Excellent writing and presentation skills, with good knowledge of spoken and written English (B2) are required.
Relevant publications are seen as essential and should be highlighted.
Specific software programming skills should also be mentioned in the application.
