Postdoctoral position in Stable Isotope Geochemistry

As part of the project “Past perspectives on tipping elements of the climate system: The Amazon rainforest and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (PPTEAM)” (PI Prof. Dr. Cristiano M. Chiessi) funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology Laboratory of the University of São Paulo is looking for an enthusiastic and independent postdoc with background in stable isotope geochemistry applied to foraminifera.
The postdoctoral project
The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) experienced a series of shutdown/marked slowdown events during the last glacial period. Yet, the paucity of records hampers the detailed characterization of the consequences of such AMOC shutdown/marked slowdown events to the deep ocean. This project will determine the detailed response of the deep western tropical Atlantic Ocean to the shutdown/marked slowdown events of the last two glacial periods. The selected candidate will apply the following proxies to marine sediment cores from the continental margin of NE South America: (i) stable carbon isotopic composition of benthic foraminifera (a proxy for the remineralization of organic matter and the source of bottom waters); (ii) neodymium isotopic composition of authigenic phases (a proxy for the source of bottom waters); and (iii) the radiocarbon age difference between coexisting benthic and planktonic foraminifera (a proxy for bottom water age). Other proxies may be added during the project. This project will ultimately provide an in-depth understanding of the responses of the deep western tropical Atlantic Ocean to abrupt changes in AMOC strength during the last two glacial periods.
The Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology Laboratory of the University of São Paulo is looking for an enthusiastic and independent candidate who is already specialized in stable isotope geochemistry applied to foraminifera. At least one-year of previous experience operating an isotopic ratio mass spectrometer MAT253 coupled to a carbonate preparation unit KIelIV is mandatory, since the post-doc will operate these devices. Due to the international character of the PPTEAM project, excellent English communication skills are expected.
Conditions of the position
The selected candidate will receive a postdoctoral fellowship from FAPESP in the amount of BRL7,373.10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in unforeseen items directly related to the research activity.
