The University of Manitoba (UM) invites applications for a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2 (T2), a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor, in the broad field of Arctic System Science. The Government of Canada has established the CRC program to enable Canadian universities to foster world-class research excellence.
The successful candidate will join the Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS; http://www.umanitoba.ca/ceos/) in the Department of Environment and Geography, CHR Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources. CEOS is a focal point of Arctic System Science and Climate Change, an established area of research excellence at UM (http://umanitoba.ca/research/media/Strategic_Research_Plan.pdf). CEOS is one of the largest and most influential Arctic research groups in the world, with a Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) Laureate, a Canada Excellence Research Chair, a Senior Canada-150 Research Chair and four Canada Research Chairs. CEOS is supported by laboratories for environmental and material sciences, and electromagnetics; Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility; the Churchill Marine Observatory; CCGS Amundsen icebreaker and a coastal research vessel the MV William Kennedy. CEOS is a founding member of the Arctic Science Partnership (http://asp-net.org).
The successful candidate will play a major role in Arctic System Science research projects administered through CEOS. This will involve leading/collaborating on major interdisciplinary projects focused around: freshwater-marine coupling with glaciers and continental runoff; ocean acidification and carbon exchange processes; physical, biological, or chemical oceanography; Arctic-midlatitude teleconnections; glaciology; climate change; or other related disciplines.
Additional responsibilities include teaching two courses, and service within and beyond UM through, for example, organizations in the candidate’s area of expertise.
The successful candidate must have a PhD and experience leading independently organized and externally funded research programs in Arctic marine and climate science. Experience in mentoring graduate/undergraduate students, and research associates, with demonstrated excellence in teaching graduates/undergraduates, is an asset. Outstanding applicants with expertise in Arctic system science, including but not limited to: physical, biological or chemical oceanography, carbon fluxes, remote sensing, ice sheet modelling, ocean modelling, glacier-marine coupling, paleoclimate reconstructions, meteorology, climatology, teleconnection science, terrestrial-marine coupling, etc., are encouraged to apply. Experience in collaborative interdisciplinary research is an asset.
A CRC-T2 nomination will be submitted soon after candidate selection. Chairs are awarded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after rigorous evaluation. The appointment is conditional on a successful CRC nomination.
Applicants must be exceptional scholars with less than 10 years since obtaining their terminal degree. CRC-T2 research chairs are tenable for five years and renewable once, supported with $100,000 annual research stipend, and an additional $20,000 annual research stipend for first-term Tier 2 Chairs. Applicants more than 10 years from their PhD (with career breaks ie. maternity, parental, extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) will have their eligibility assessed through the program’s justification process.
