Job description

This tenure-track professor position is supported financially through the German Federal and State Governments’ tenure-track program to promote the careers of researchers early on. Applications from researchers who have just completed their doctoral degree and are in the early phase of their career are strongly encouraged.

The successful applicant will assume responsibilities in research and teaching in the field of model-ing human-environmental interactions.

Appointment requirements are governed by Article 102 a of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerlHG).

The performance goals to be determined will basically deal with the following areas:

Research
Teaching
Promoting early-career researchers
Academic committee work
Leadership and management
Language proficiency

At the time of appointment to the permanent professorship, all the general regulations and condi-tions regarding public sector employment must be fulfilled.

In addition, any candidates who completed their doctoral degree at Freie Universität Berlin and/or have Freie Universität Berlin as their primary employer must comply with the regulations stipulated by the Berlin Higher Education Act, Article102 c, paragraph 3.

Successful candidates should have an interdisciplinary background that focuses on physical geog-raphy, geodata management, and big data analysis with links to human geography. Expertise in the application of physically based process modeling, neuronal networks, network models, or/and agent-based models, as well as expertise in making connections between these various models is ex-pected. They should also be able to substantiate their research expertise with international publica-tions and demonstrate experience in successfully acquiring external grants for research projects. Applicants should, therefore, have a successful teaching record at the university level and be able to teach in German or English.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

The appointee will collaborate closely with professors of the different sub-disciplines at the Institute of Geographical Sciences. They are also expected to develop and implement interdisciplinary pro-jects as well as assume the responsibility for central geodata management tasks in the framework of joint research activities. Moreover, the successful candidate is expected to pursue collaborative projects in research and teaching that use interdisciplinary approaches and reach out to other de-partments. The new junior professor will also be expected to teach courses in ways that are sensi-tive to gender and diversity issues. They should also be prepared to fill any gaps in their knowledge of German so that by the time of their tenure review they have at least C1-level (CEFR) proficiency.

The position entails a three-year appointment as a civil servant for a fixed period (“Beamter/Beam-tin auf Zeit”). Pending a successful review process, the position can be extended for another three years. If the appointee successfully passes the tenure review, they will be appointed to a perma-nent professorship. The permanent appointment will not be advertised as a separate position. As part of this process, performance goals will be negotiated at the time the junior professor is hired. The fulfillment of those goals will be assessed as part of the tenure review (Article 102 c of the Ber-lin Higher Education Act, § 102 c BerlHG).
