Job description

The Department of Neotectonics and Thermochronology, Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics, seeks an applicant for the position of research scientist and manager of low temperature thermochronology laboratory. Our fully established laboratory is equipped with an Alphachron helium extraction line, an up-to date mineral separation and chemical laboratory as well as all required microscopic equipment. The lab has also two fully trained technicians (geologists and chemist) in charge of mineral separation and chemical dissolution/spiking.
The candidate will lead our (U-Th)/He thermochronology laboratory and perform research in this discipline. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated experience in running a thermochronology laboratory, as he/she will be responsible for the complete helium dating process, including training of students and visitors, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. The selected candidate will be encouraged to lead his/her own research with freedom to develop the methodology, will be expected to write proposals, collaborate with other interested groups, and publish scientific papers.
Position requirements: 1) Candidates are required to have completed the PhD degree prior to start the position. The start date for the position is as soon as possible. 2) Although various backgrounds will be considered, experience in low-temperature thermochronology – helium dating technique and in operating a device for helium extraction and analysis (for example AlphachronTM etc.) is especially desirable. 3) Good interpersonal and communication skills and a collaborative style of research are required.
Initial appointment is for 3 years with a possibility for additional 2 years and it has the potential for becoming a permanent position after first evaluation and good progress.

How to apply

Applications must be received by 20th October 2020 (applications received after this date may be considered if the position is not filled). Complete applications will consist of a Letter of research interest and motivation, CV (including publications list and past laboratory experience), and at least two reference contacts. The applications and other questions regarding this position should be directed to Petra Stepancikova at stepancikova@irsm.cas.cz.
