Job description

The position is part of the new “Digital Geochemical Data Infrastructure” (DIGIS) research group at the University of Göttingen, supported by a cluster of four research projects funded through the DFG’s Scientific Library Services and Information Systems (LIS) programme [https://www.dfg.de/en/research_funding/programmes/infrastructure/lis/index.html]. A total of five research positions will be filled for three years. An extension of the positions for further three years is planned, pending excellent performance of DIGIS and successful follow-up grant application.
The aim of DIGIS is to develop and maintain the highly successful and well-established geochemical GEOROC [http://georoc.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/georoc/database], prepare new means of data harvesting and data entry as well as to stabilize and streamline IT connections with other existing geochemical databases such as EarthChem of the IEDA (Interdisciplinary Earth Data Alliance). DIGIS also forms an integral part of the current NFDI4Earth initiative.
The DIGIS research group will be composed of:
(1) IT-data scientist
(2) Geochemist in Research Data Management and Geochemical Statistics
(3) PhD position in Theoretical Geochemistry / Geochemical Statistics
(4) PhD position in Computer Linguistics
(5) Position in IT-Research Data Management

The position to be filled here is position 2.

Project description and responsibilities:
The successful applicant will be responsible for the development, implementation, and application of new concepts for the curation of geochemical data, data entry and archiving for GEOROC and will work closely with the IT data scientists of the project (positions 1 and 5). This includes API-programming to link the database with independently developed data analysis and visualisation tools. Further responsibilities are to develop or adapt a digital archiving system for sample that links GEOROC base to a physical sample archive.
Qualifications: PhD degree in geochemistry or related fields. Advanced experience and training in the statistical analysis, handling, visualisation, and interpretation of large geochemical data sets is also required. Fundamental knowledge in research data management and the design and curation of large data bases and their IT infrastructure are essential. Excellent written and spoken communication in English and experience in publication of geochemical data are mandatory. We also expect the successful candidate to be an active team player in our new research group with experience in scientific publication.

Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome.
