Do you want to help better understand our environment – and to develop new ways of using that information?

A PhD position in seismology will give you that possibility. Indeed, we are looking for an ambitious and open-minded person to fill a PhD position in seismology in our department.

The successful candidate will perform research – analyzing data from seismological, infrasound, and other sensor networks. It will be expected that the successful candidate writes a dissertation, and there will also be some participation in teaching. There might be the opportunity to become part of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences, i.e. the doctoral school at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy.

Detecting seismoacoustic sources, understanding them, and imaging the structure around us (under- and overground) are important to us. The AlpArray, and the upcoming AdriaArray project, will form an international context of your work. Fairfield Nodal and infrasound sensors are also available for pioneering new applications, as well as data from distributed acoustic sensing cables. State-of-the-art spectral-element modeling will help you understand the observations.

The Vienna region has much to offer for geophysical research, e.g., the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), and Austrian partner institutions and companies involved with technology development and transfer. The region also has active subsurface deformation and thus a need to better understand seismic hazard in this populated area.

Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
Participation in
- research (including participation in publishing the results).
- teaching and independent teaching as defined by the collective agreement.

We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months.

Profile:
- Completed Diploma or Master degree in Geophysics or neighbouring disciplines, e.g. Physics
- Computer and programming knowledge are required
- Knowledge of English language is a must (excellent command of written and spoken English)
- Methodological and didactic competence
- Good ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
- Ability to work in a team
- Basic experience in research methods and academic writing.

- Knowledge of German language is a bonus
