The Department of Geology at the Faculty for Geo- und Atmospheric Sciences at the Leopold-Franzens University Innsbruck has a

Tenure Track Position in “Palaeoclimate”

to fill at the earliest convenience.

We seek candidates who pursue innovative and internationally visible research in palaeoclimate with a focus on mountain regions and periglacial environments using speleothem archives. The successful candidate has a strong research record in Quaternary geochronology and geochemistry and uses a combination of field and laboratory techniques. The job holder will be involved in the Research Centers Geodynamics – Geomaterials and Climate – Cryosphere and Atmosphere and thus in the Research Area Mountain Regions. Doctoral students under the supervision of the future job holder will be hosted by the doctoral programme Mountain Climate and Environment.

Responsibilities

  • Initiation, development and lead of innovative research on palaeoclimate in mountain regions and periglacial environments using speleothems
  • lead of a high-profile research group
  • acquisition of external funding and scientific publications in leading journals
  • teaching of courses in the BSc and MSc and PhD programmes taught in Earth Sciences at the University of Innsbruck
  • (co-)supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD students
  • academic administration

Eligibility requirements

  • doctoral degree in geosciences (or a related discipline), with a palaeoclimatic research topic, and some years of post-doctoral experience
  • profound experience in terrestrial palaeoclimatology
  • expertise in the study of caves and speleothems
  • regular publications in Q1 Journals
  • excellent organizational and communication skills
  • involvement in research projects and acquisition of competitive grants
  • fluency in English. Knowledge of the German language is not strictly required for this position, but the successful candidate will convincingly demonstrate her/his willingness to acquire the basics for teaching in the BSc programme
  • research experience abroad
  • teaching skills and experience with (co-)supervising students on all levels

Format of the position

At the University of Innsbruck, a ’tenure track position‘ allows for a career up to a tenured full professor.
The successful applicant will enter a six-years’ work contract on the basis of the ‘Angestelltengesetz’ (Employees Act; extent of employment: 100%) and at the same time concludes a ‘Qualification Agreement’ according to § 27 of the ‘Kollektivvertrag’ (Austrian Collective Labor Agreement for university personnel); (s)he will start her/his occupation at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Once the targets of the ‘Qualification Agreement’ are reached, the position will be tenured, thus promoting the holder of the position to Associate Professor.
Subsequently, a full professor position according to § 99 (4) of the ‘Universitätsgesetz’ (Austrian University Act) will be opened, for which the Associate Professor is eligible to apply.

The application must at least contain a full CV including the scientific and professional career stages; a list of scientific publications, speeches as well as other scientific activities (like seminars, conferences, etc.); Description of completed, ongoing and planned research projects and the five most important works of the applicant. Research and teaching concept, as well as a statement of the qualification goals which the applicant wishes to reach at this position. These are to be explained at the hearing and subsequently represent the starting point for the negotiation of the ‘Qualification Agreement’.
