A 3-year post-doctoral position in data assimilation for numerical weather prediction is open in Atmospheric dynamics group at the University of Hamburg, https://www.mi.uni-hamburg.de/arbeitsgruppen/theoretische-meteorologie.html.
The position is a part of a new project funded by the Germany Science Foundation. The successful candidate will apply novel data assimilation techniques using the recently developed TIGAR model (https://doi.org/10.1002/qj.4006), which explicitly simulates the Rossby and inertia-gravity waves. The variational framework will include large-scale equatorial waves, already demonstrated to hold a great promise for improving tropical analyses. This project will extend these ideas to the global atmosphere using the flow-dependent background-error information from the ensemble forecasts, and estimate potential of improved tropical analyses on extratropical forecasts.
Requirements include a PhD degree in atmospheric/ocean sciences, physics, engineering or applied mathematics. A PhD topic in or related to data assimilation, optimal control theory or variational analysis is an advantage. We are looking for candidates with a keen interest in the initial-value problem for weather forecasting, with advanced scientific programming skills, scientific writing skills and a capacity for teamwork.
