Job description

The University of Innsbruck invites applications for the position of

University Professor of TECTONICS

at the Institute of Geology at the Faculty of Geo- and Atmospheric Sciences.

It is a position in accordance with § 98 of the Austrian Universities’ Act (Universitätsgesetz – UG) and will be based on a civil-law employment contract with the University on the basis of the Salaried Employees Act (Angestelltengesetz). The contract will be concluded for an unlimited period; the extent of employment is 100%.

Responsibilities

The chair-holder is to represent the subject of tectonics both in research and teaching with a focus on tectonics of orogenic belts, esp. in the area of field-related research of endogenic orogenic processes.

The regional geological focus of the successful candidate does not have to be exclusively in the Alps, however, it is expected that this person will also develop a regional focus on the Alps and its geodynamics. The successful candidate will seek close cooperation with the other research groups of the Institutes of Geology, and Mineralogy & Petrography, especially within the Research Centre Geodynamics – Geomaterials. Furthermore, the successful candidate will actively participate in the faculty-spanning Research Area “Mountain Regions”, and will lead and participate in national and international large-scale projects in the alpine realm.

In teaching, the successful candidate will cover structural geology, tectonics, and geodynamics, with a focus on field-based education as well the regional geology of orogens on all three levels of the study programs in Earth Sciences (BSc., MSc., PhD).

Personal involvement in academic administration, self-governance and science communication will form another essential duty.

Employment Requirements

a) a doctoral degree in Earth Sciences (or a related discipline)
b) pertinent habilitation or comparable qualification (e.g. senior lecturer, associate professor);
c) regular publications in leading international peer-reviewed academic journals;
d) proven competence in field-based structural geological research and investigation of endogenic orogenic processes;
e) evidence of involvement in international research;
f) research experience abroad;
g) experience in acquiring and managing competitive external research funds;
h) pronounced teaching skills and proven expertise in field-based structural geology teaching and the ability to develop this further in combination with new digital learning methods;
i) management skills;
j) fluency in English. Knowledge of the German language is not strictly required for this position, but the successful candidate will convincingly demonstrate a willingness to acquire the basics for teaching in the BSc programme;
k) excellent organisational and communication skills.
