The research will focus on micro-scale mechanisms driving processes of soil carbon sequestration in cover crop systems. It will aim specifically at deciphering interactions of soil physical processes with soil biology and biochemistry in plant-soil continua. The experimental component of the position will involve designing and carrying out innovative laboratory/greenhouse experiments aimed at better understanding how cover crop mixtures create micro-scale soil environments optimal for microbial functioning and protection of soil C. The project involves 13C plant labeling, root structure analysis, X-ray computed micro-tomography, zymography of extracellular hydrolytic and oxidative enzymes in soils, and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy in soil cores.
The successful candidate will have a Ph. D. in Soil and/or Environmental Sciences. Required skills include in-depth knowledge of soil science and plant-soil interactions. Experience in isotope applications in plant, soil, and environmental sciences is a plus. Experience with X-ray computed tomography, and XRF imaging, is desirable. A track record of publication in quality peer-review journals is a must. Demonstrated creativity, independence, and excellent communication skills, both written and oral are expected.
The position is for one year with a possibility of a renewal on per annual basis contingent upon funding and/or satisfactory performance. Starting date is January 2022 or as soon as possible after that.
