Institute of Coastal Systems Analysis and Modeling
The Institute for Coastal Systems Analysis and Modeling studies the dynamics of coastal systems as part of the Earth system and develops prediction methods and future scenarios for coastal systems. One focus of our research is the study of coastal ecosystems, which are subject to increasing pressure to change due to climate change, use of coastal environments, and other human drivers.

The Coastal and Climate Office for Northern Germany at the Institute for Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modelling is looking for a Data Scientist for geoscientific data analysis and webtool development.

This 3-year position is embedded in the research program of the Institute for Coastal Systems at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”, Topic 4: Coastal Transition Zones under Natural and Human Pressure. Moreover, it is associated with the activities of the German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM), as well as the JPI Knowledge Hub Sea Level Rise. The position comprises the scientific data analyses according to relevant social issues of coastal and climate research. In this context, your task will be to update, refit and further develop our web-based information products and to implement concepts for new web-based information formats. These formats aim to provide subject-external users with easy access to up-to-date coastal climate information. For this purpose, large amounts of data from different disciplinary contexts have to be brought together and a meaningful and demand-oriented linkage has to be enabled.

Your tasks

The tasks of this position are to update, refit and maintain our current web-based information systems. Moreover, new web-based information products will be developed. All tasks aim to enable easy access to stakeholder-relevant information. This requires scientific data analyses regarding stakeholder needs, the review of existing data and technical solutions together with the analysis of large amounts of climate data and establishing links in demand-actuated context.

Your profile The following qualifications are required:
  • university degree in Geosciences or related disciplines
  • very good knowledge of common web technologies and the willingness to learn more in this area
  • very good knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, Python, etc.)
  • processing and analysis of scientific data in NetCDF format
  • very good knowledge of German and English, both written and spoken

The position aims to cater to information needs of stake­holders in Northern Germany, which are related to our coastal research at Hereon. A strong background in coastal research and climate science and experience in dealing with customers / users are highly beneficial.

Furthermore, the following experiences are desirable:

  • ability to work independently and in a team
  • experience with Esri technologies including ArcGIS Server solutions
  • knowledge of version management
  • first experiences in scientific publishing
  • ability to work in an inter- or transdisciplinary manner
