Job description

The IOW invites applications for a

W2-Professorship as head of the research unit “Marine Observations” at the earliest possible date (within budget considerations).

The IOW is member of the Science Association Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (WGL). It comprises four scientific sections: Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Marine Geology and Biological Oceanography. The institute is obliged to marine basic research with a focus on coastal and shelf seas such as the Baltic Sea. IOW is responsible for the German territorial duty of the Environmental Observations in Baltic Sea
within the frame work of the HELCOM.

The position encompasses also a

W2-Professorship for “Marine Observations”

at the University of Rostock. Teaching obligations amount to 4 hours per week during the 2 semesters. The selection scheme is jointly organised with the University of Rostock.

We seek for a scientist of international reputation with excellent performance in the area of observational oceanography or limnology. The successful candidate will – in collaboration with other IOW scientists – coordinate the research unit “Marine Observations” and will give substantial impulses for the understanding of land – ocean interaction. Applications from Physical, Biological and Chemical Oceanographers and Limnologists as well as from Marine Instrumentation are welcome. We expect profound expertise in the areas of in-situ measurements, remote sensing or analysis of big data sets. Experience with autonomous observational systems is welcome as well. We expect further a specific interest in investigations in coastal seas with focus on shallow coastal regions. The successful candidate will actively further develop the research profile of the IOW and the department “Maritime Systems” of the University of Rostock.

The requirements for appointment are determined in accordance with § 58 para. 1 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LHG M-V): completed university studies, doctorate, experience in teaching, habilitation or comparable scientific achievements, usually in the context of a junior professorship.

A special focus is placed on academic achievement and teaching qualifications as well academic organization and administration. For this reason candidates should describe previous teaching results, ideas regarding future teaching (including didactic lesson planning) and their prior experience in academic and research management. In addition, candidates are expected to have experience and interest in developing programs that can attract and maintain external funding.

The teaching duties are regulated in the cooperation agreement between IOW and the University of Rostock.

The appointment is made according to the Berlin Model. In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the professorship will be filled by a lifetime civil servant or, if necessary, by a temporary civil servant for a period of 5 years. It is also possible to fill the position as a regular state employee. The position holder will carry out his/her scientific work at the IOW.

Active engagement and experience in the acquisition of third-party funds are expected. The University of Rostock is committed to its university management guidelines.
