Job description

Job Description

The Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research (KOCHI; Director: Takehiro Hirose), Institute for Extra-cutting-edge Science and Technology Avant-garde Research (X-STAR) is soliciting applications for a tenure-track or postdoctoral researcher.

KOCHI, X-STAR utilizes core samples recovered through ocean drilling to conduct state-of-the-art research and development across a broad range of disciplines including rock mechanics, focusing on earthquakes and faulting; isotope geochemistry, targeting Earth materials and circulation processes; and geomicrobiology, to better understand the nature of sub-seafloor life and the biosphere. We also aim to develop multidisciplinary studies of interconnected processes that characterize the evolution of the Earth system from past to future.

The successful candidate will be involved in experiments on geological materials, as well as analyses of core samples and data obtained through scientific drilling projects, toward a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of seismogenic zones and mechanics of earthquakes and faulting. The successful candidate will lead these investigations, and may also pursue their own research to extend the frontiers of our knowledge and provide new perspectives and ideas.

[Research Description]
The successful candidate will:
(1) Research the mechanics of earthquakes and faulting from a material sciences perspective using geological, seismological, and geophysical methods.
(2) Actively contribute to the development of experimental methods for (1).
