Tectonics and Structural Geology (TS)
Applications open for a postdoc opportunity that aims to document the shortening rates and the topographic history of the Amazonian Andes using a multi-method approach that includes (U-Th)/He dating of apatite and zircons. The selected candidate will conduct research as part of a wider project supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) through its Young Investigator Phase 2 (JPII) funding opportunity.
This post-doctoral fellowship seeks to (i) establish the analytical protocols for (U-Th)/He dating in various minerals at the Geochronological Research Center of the Institute of Geosciences at the University of São Paulo (IGc-USP), Brazil; (ii) perform (U-Th)/He analyses in apatites and zircons from samples collected in the Amazonian Andes and boreholes of the Trans-Amazon Drilling Project (TADP) using this new facility; and (iii) develop a model of thermokinematic evolution of the study area incorporating data from other methods such as fission-track thermochronology and sedimentary provenance.
Pre-requisites: Experience in the technical implementation and acquisition of data using mass spectrometry methods, especially noble gas and ICP mass spectrometry, and in the interpretation of thermochronometric data.
Duration: 24 months (initially for 12 months, with expected extension for 12 additional months).
This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationality. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of R$ 8,479.20 / month and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship, which should be spent on items directly related to the research activity.
Send application to mparra@iee.usp.br with the title “Candidate for a postdoctoral fellowship in (U-Th)/He thermochronology” and: (i) a one-page cover letter in English describing the candidate’s scientific interests and career objectives; (ii) a curriculum vitae with a publications list; and (iii) two recommendation letters.
