The Institute of Geosciences of the University of São Paulo aims to provide the highest level of undergraduate and graduate professional training in Geosciences, with the aim of contributing to scientific and technological development and collaborating to improve social and economic conditions.

These activities are carried out in an integrated way with the carrying out of relevant and quality scientific research in nearly all fundamental areas of Geosciences, in addition to studies focused on prospecting and mining of mineral goods, hydrogeology, and geological aspects of planning the territorial occupation and of protecting the environment.

The Institute also aims to provide the Brazilian population with access to scientific and technological information in Geosciences.

Its permanent objectives include:
- Make the profession of geologist better known.
- Train human resources (Undergraduate and Graduate) at a level of excellence.
- Support research in Geosciences that enable the country’s scientific and technological progress, in line with sustainable development.
- Disseminate the Geosciences and their importance for life and the physical environment that sustains it, via cultural instruments and university extension.

Job description

Post-doctoral position in Petrology of Volcanic Rocks

Summary: The fellowship holder within the FAPESP Thematic Project, supervised by Prof. Valdecir A. Janasi (IGc/USP), will investigate the magmatic evolution of an intrusive body (the Limeira Gabbro) of the Paraná Magmatic Province, focusing on the identification of processes of liquid immiscibility, through the integration of structural studies and the geochemistry of minerals, rocks, and melt inclusions (including trace and volatile elements).

Eligibility criteria: PhD in Geosciences or related areas; experience in research projects on igneous petrology, especially volcanic rocks. History of publications, communication skills, and written and spoken fluency in English. Problem-solving, autonomous working, and critical thinking skills are considered positives.
