Job Description
The Research and Development Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Forecasting (FEAT; Director: Takane Hori), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is soliciting applications for Postdoctoral Researchers for the research project “Current understanding and forecasting of the plate boundary where megathrust earthquakes are generated (FY2020-FY2025)”.

At FEAT, we are conducting research in the following areas to deepen our understanding of the current state of the plate boundary where megathrust earthquakes are generated, and to forecast its future evolution:
1. Development and deployment of submarine systems for real-time, high-quality observations of crustal deformation/seismic activity in wide areas (Research and Development Group for Seafloor Observation).
2. Development and evaluation of methods for monitoring crustal deformation/seismic activity based on ocean floor observation network data (Earthquake and Tsunami Monitoring Group).
3. Development of an advanced three-dimensional underground structural model of the seismogenic zone, and the development and implementation of methods for understanding the current state of the plate boundary where megathrust earthquake generation occurs and forecasting its evolution through analyzing crustal activity data based on this model (Earthquake Forecasting Research Group).

In our current recruitment for proposals, we are seeking Postdoctoral Researchers who can engage in research and development related to any of the following topics:
(1) Analysis of earthquakes, slow earthquakes, and crustal deformation based on data obtained by fiber-optic sensing, such as distributed acoustic sensing and submarine observation networks, or the development and implementation of analysis systems.
(2) Research on sensing technology using wide-area optical fiber networks using optical combs, highly stable lasers, or other fiber optics technologies.
(3) Development of data analysis methods to quantify spatiotemporal variation in interplate locking near subduction zones, based on terrestrial and seafloor seismological and crustal deformation data using a high-resolution three-dimensional structure model.
(4) Conducting onboard surveys to acquire seafloor geodetic observation data and analyzing the acquired data.
