Job description

Job Description
The Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research (KOCHI; Director: Takehiro Hirose), Institute for Extra-cutting-edge Science and Technology Avant-garde Research (X-STAR) is soliciting applications for a tenure-track or postdoctoral researcher.

KOCHI, X-STAR conducts multidisciplinary studies that characterize the evolution of the Earth system from past to future, based on the analysis of various Earth and planetary materials such as core samples obtained from scientific ocean drilling. State-of-the-art research and development in a wide range of disciplines includes studies of global climate change on geological time scales, the biosphere under the seafloor, subduction zone earthquakes, and material circulation from the Earth’s surface to the interior.

The successful candidate will be involved in research in the chemical science of Earth and planetary materials, based on state-of-the-art analytical or experimental approaches. We seek a researcher with expertise in analyzing H2O or related elements, isotopes, and microstructures in rocks and minerals, working to elucidate the dynamics and environmental changes at the Earth’s surface and interior, toward a comprehensive understanding of the origin and circulation of water in the Earth. The successful candidate will lead these investigations, and may also pursue their own research to extend the frontiers of our knowledge and provide new perspectives.

[Research Description]
The successful candidate will:
(1) Research the origin and circulation of water and related materials in the Earth from a materials science perspective using geochemical or mineralogical methods.
(2) Actively contribute to the development of analytical methods for (1).
