Job description

The University of Calgary is excited to announce a Resource and Policy Nexus cluster hiring initiative aimed at bridging innovative scientific research and policy development in areas of Earth, Energy and Environmental Science. We seek outstanding applicants for three full-time Assistant Professor (tenure-track) positions based in the Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment (Earth@UCalgary) within the Faculty of Science and partially seconded to the School of Public Policy (SPP). This important cluster hiring initiative will launch Earth@UCalgary in bold new directions in collaboration with SPP, enabling scholars to explore transdisciplinary research that transforms science into action, ensuring equitable and sustainable development of natural resources through relevant, science-based policy recommendations. We are looking for change-makers who will strengthen the university’s research, teaching and innovation capacity to tackle key natural resource challenges that crosscut science and policy. The anticipated start date for all positions is July 1, 2024.

Position Descriptions
We seek outstanding candidates with expertise at the intersection of science and policy, specifically in the areas of interest outlined above that span the fields of earth, energy, and environment. Applicants must hold a PhD in earth science, energy science, environmental science, or a closely related discipline and have a strong record of, or proven potential for, impactful research and scholarship. Successful candidates will be expected to establish an active, high-quality research program, as evidenced by: securing external research funding from a variety of sources; publication in scholarly and/or policy-relevant forums; dissemination of innovative scholarly work and applied policy options; and fostering relations with relevant partners (e.g., government, Indigenous groups, industry, academic) in the field.

Each candidate will play an important role in teaching and research supervision of students. Successful candidates are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Earth@UCalgary and the SPP, and should provide evidence of teaching excellence and the desire to pursue pedagogical and curricular development in an academic setting. Evidence of effective research supervision as well as experience in policy analysis and policy knowledge mobilization is an asset. Additionally, candidates should provide evidence of collegial contributions within their organization and their commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), since they will be expected to fully engage in departmental and university service at the University of Calgary and work effectively with people from diverse communities and cultures.
