Job description

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia is seeking a creative and ambitious postdoctoral researcher to join Prof. Hylke Beck’s research group within the Climate and Livability Initiative (CLI). The researcher will leverage machine learning (ML) to enhance natural hazards forecasting, climate change impact assessment, and water resources assessment. Responsibilities include initiating and developing high-quality research, publishing in leading journals, and presenting at international conferences.

Applicants should have a strong background in various deep learning methodologies, including convolutional, recurrent, and graph neural networks, as well as generative modeling. Expertise in Python, ML frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, source code versioning, and big data analytics is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong publication record. Previous experience in earth sciences or related fields is not required, making this position an ideal opportunity for computational and data scientists looking to apply their skills to address real-world problems.

Located on the Red Sea 80 km north of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, KAUST is an international graduate-level research university. KAUST offers state-of-the-art research facilities, including one of the fastest supercomputers in the world, and an attractive compensation package, including a tax-free salary upwards of US$50,000 p.a., free fully-furnished on-campus housing, four weeks of paid annual leave (in addition to 15 national holidays), extensive health care coverage (medical and dental), relocation assistance, and free education at KAUST international schools for children. The appointment is for one year and may be renewed for up to three years, based on performance.
