Job description

Assistant Professor of Geography (Environmental Challenges)

University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: JPF09700

As part of a cluster hire in “Environment and Justice”, the Department of Geography at UCLA invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of physical geography. We are especially interested in applicants whose research and teaching are geared toward understanding environmental challenges in ways that are directly relevant to policy. Examples of areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, the energy-water-food nexus, effects of climate change including extreme events and resultant hazards, adaptations and nature-based solutions to projected change in natural or built environments, and the effects of pollution and pathogen outbreaks on the health of human populations or ecosystems. Competitive applicants will be those who are strongly motivated to contribute to policy, for example by working with government agencies or other resource-management entities in ways that facilitate efficient transfer of knowledge that is critical to guide on-the-ground decision making and policy. Applications must hold a PhD in Geography or related discipline at the time of appointment.
Appointment will begin July 1, 2025. The posted https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/index.html set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table #1. The salary range for this position is $78,200-$101,400. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.
The UCLA Department of Geography is among the top ranked Geography departments in the nation and offers a multi-faceted faculty with numerous opportunities for cross-disciplinary scholarship. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
Please submit your online application to the Search Committee for Assistant Professor of Physical Geography (Environmental Challenges).
Include a cover letter describing your qualifications for this position; curriculum vitae; statement of research interests; statement of teaching interests; a statement of contributions to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion describing your past, present and future planned contributions; the Authorization to Release Form and the names and contact information of three referees. The initial review of completed applications will commence October 14, 2024 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. Applications submitted after this date may be considered but the application portal will close November 1, 2024.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists’ current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
