Global climate and ice sheet modelling scientist
Cryospheric Sciences (CR)
Ocean Sciences (OS)
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a 4 year, full-time position for a scientist to work on global climate modeling with a particular focus on how climate affects the Greenland ice sheet and vice versa. Global climate modelling and climate research are key research areas in the National Center for Climate Research (NCKF), and we are seeking a highly motivated candidate to strengthen these areas of work in NCKF. As part of NCKF, you will work in a department with a strong profile in both global and regional climate modeling, as well as remote sensing. The position is in the framework of the Horizon Europe project “ICELINK” but you may also be engaged in other, related projects.
As our new colleague, you will work with our Earth system model (EC-Earth), containing interactive ice sheets in both hemispheres, with focus on improving the representation of the ice sheet dynamics and coupling with the climate system, applying the system for sensitivity simulations and CMIP7 (Couple Model Intercomparison Project phase 7) Assessment Fast Track experiments, and assessing, e.g., the Greenland ice sheet future changes as well as the feedback of the Greenland ice sheet on the climate system. You will also work with analyses of the modeled climate output, lead and contribute to scientific papers, and participate in developing new grant applications with your NCKF-colleagues and external collaborators.
Expected qualifications
- A PhD degree in climate science, meteorology, oceanography, glaciology, or related fields (e.g., physics or engineering)
- Experience with climate modeling, preferably of the ice sheets, ocean or atmosphere (e.g., global atmospheric or ocean modeling, numerical weather prediction, Earth system modeling, ice sheet modeling)
- Advanced programming skills (e.g., Linux/Unix, Fortran and Python scripting) and experience with HPC systems
- Research experience working with polar (Arctic or Antarctic) climate or CMIP ensemble data is an advantage
- Good communication skills in oral and written English
- If non-Danish speaker, a wish to learn Danish within a few years to also be able to support DMI’s role as national climate advisor to the Danish Government
About the NCKF and DMI
The position is in the Danish National Center for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI, which employs more than 70 climate scientists, including PhD students, junior and senior scientists. The companion Weather Research department employs researchers working mainly with operational meteorology, oceanography and hydrology. Both DMI research departments have strong international profiles, which are also reflected in the many nationalities employed and in the use of both English and Danish as working languages.
NCKF has been established with the purpose to conduct critical climate research for the Kingdom of Denmark (Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands) and bring together climate knowledge, to form the basis for green transition and climate adaptation. The activities include assessments of observed and future climate change of the physical climate system, and on extreme weather and sea level around Denmark. This research builds on both global and regional modeling as well as observations from remote sensing, in-situ measurements and field work. DMI is part of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities and the Danish government’s climate science advisor, creating and communicating knowledge about weather, climate and the sea to the Kingdom of Denmark. DMI’s warnings, weather forecasts and services safeguard life and infrastructure and provide a basis for planning in a changing climate. As an authority on weather, climate and the sea, DMI provides meteorological services to the Danish defense, emergency preparedness as well as civil aviation and shipping in Denmark and Greenland.
DMI has approximately 400 employees, most of whom work at DMI’s new headquarter at Sankt Kjelds Plads in Copenhagen. The new place have interior design that allows for an activity-based way of working.
Employment and salary
Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements, depending on previous experience. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. Employees, who are recruited from abroad, and who are able to meet certain conditions, have the possibility for a reduced tax scheme for a specific number of years. The position is limited to four years, but has the possibility of being extended or made permanent depending on, e.g., future funding and tasks.
DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. The employment area is within the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Facilities and associated institutions. DMI is located at Sankt Kjelds Plads 11, 2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark. Physical presence is expected at least on a weekly basis.
