THE POSITION
We invite you to apply for a

Postdoctoral Position on Deep Convection
(W-0044 | all genders)

to conceptualize and quantify the controls of anvil extent and cloud feedback of tropical deep convection across scales. As a successful candidate, you will combine your expertise in deep convective processes with advanced data-driven methods and have the autonomy to set your own scientific emphasis. As team member of the ERC Starting Grant “MesoClou”, you will work with PhD students and a fellow postdoc and be supported by an external team of deep-learning experts. You will also become an integral part of the Multiscale Cloud Physics Group currently being established by Dr Franziska Glassmeier at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology.

YOUR PROFILE
We are looking for a curiosity-driven and conceptually-minded candidate who enjoys scientific discussion and complex data analysis.

To be considered for this position, you must have a PhD in a relevant field. As a suitable candidate, you have expertise in deep convective cloud processes and experience with scientific data analysis. Prior experience in applying machine learning methods is not required. You should also have experience in presenting your results to the scientific community at international conferences and through peer-reviewed publications in international journals.

As a successful candidate, we will expect you to shape, perform and present your research independently and work individually as well as in teams.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
  • The position is offered for 2 years (full time). We are open to considering part-time employment
  • The position is available after June 1, 2025. The start date is negotiable
  • Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions depending on qualification (E 14 TVöD), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and those of the German civil service.
