Job description

Tenure Track Assistant Professor, Department of Earth and Climate Sciences

The Department of Earth and Climate Sciences at Middlebury College invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning fall 2026. We seek an earth scientist who studies the climate system with approaches that might include, but are not limited to, numerical modeling, spatial analysis, and data science. Candidates should thoughtfully consider how their area of specialty complements existing departmental strengths in paleoclimatology, oceanography, geochemistry, Quaternary geology, and geomorphology. The applicant should be prepared to mentor undergraduate students, engage them in an active, externally-funded research program, and to make use of departmental resources including (but not limited to) the resources listed here.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach the equivalent of 4.5 courses per year. This teaching load often translates to two lab-based courses and one non-lab course per year distributed among introductory and upper-level courses, and would include our existing computational Climate Dynamics course. As part of a full teaching load, the candidate will also contribute to Middlebury’s First Year Seminar Program and Winter Term course offerings. All faculty at Middlebury are also expected to contribute to service to the College including, but not limited to, committee membership and serving as Director or Chair of a Program or Department when asked.

Middlebury College is a top-tier liberal arts college with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in both faculty teaching, research, and service. It is also an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to fostering a truly open, and supportive learning, teaching, and working environment. The College hires faculty from a myriad of life experiences, cultures, frames of reference, social identities, and learning perspectives to help cultivate and advance innovation in our curriculum and to provide a rich and varied educational experience to our talented and distinguished student body. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.

Review of applications will begin on October 1st, 2025. Through Interfolio (https://apptrkr.com/6318670), submit: (1) a letter of application addressed to Search Committee; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of teaching philosophy and plans including a description of introductory and upper-level courses you are prepared to teach; (4) a statement of research plans including how you plan to involve undergraduates in your work. Each statement should fit within two pages. Please also provide (5) a one-page statement that addresses how your teaching, scholarship, mentorship and/or professional service engages with issues of diversity and inclusion.; and (6) the names and contact information of 3 references to be contacted during the second stage of the search. This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $88,963 – $100,129 per year.

More information about the department is available on our department page, Middlebury College: Earth and Climate Sciences. Offers of employment are contingent on completion of a background check.
