Postdoctoral Fellow Position – Earth System Variability and Extremes
IBS Center for Climate Physics
The IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP), (https://ibsclimate.org/) directed by Prof. Axel Timmermann, is dedicated to advancing the understanding of natural climate variability, man-made climate change and their impacts on the hydrological cycle, regional processes, ice-sheets, and sea level. The ICCP is a leading center for Earth system dynamics and predictability, and integrated climate system science and climate modeling. The ICCP is generously funded through the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) (http://ibs.re.kr).
The ICCP is located in Busan, the second largest city in South Korea and the ninth largest port city in the world. Surrounded by ocean and mountains, the city has a dramatic natural background. From designer cafes, international movie and art festivals, award-winning restaurants to temples at the end of hiking trails, Busan has something to offer for everyone.

Postdoctoral Fellow Position – Earth System Variability and Extremes
Employer: IBS Center for Climate Physics Location: Pusan National University, Busan, South Korea Salary: 54-60 million KRW/year Term: Full Time, 2 year, with possibility for renewalApplicants for this position should have a PhD in climate sciences, meteorology, physics, computer science or a related field. Candidates are expected to have strong computational skills, excitement to work on a new research subject, a good publication record, a high level of independence, curiosity and creativity, and an interest in working in an international and interdisciplinary research environment. Experience in working with and running Earth system models are an advantage.
The successful candidate will join the research group of Prof. Christian Franzke and will work on Earth system variability and compound extreme events. We will use Earth system models to investigate how interactive fire emissions affect climate variability, climate sensitivity and extreme events. This is based on a recent study on lightning-climate-fire interactions. We will also investigate the interactions and long-term variability of fire and vegetation and their impact on compound extremes.
