Job description

The Ocean Center at National Taiwan University (NTU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow, Assistant Research Fellow, or Associate Research Fellow (or higher) to join a recently funded four-year research project on decadal climate prediction using the Taiwan Earth System Model (TaiESM, Lee et al. (2020), https://gmd.copernicus.org/articles/13/3887/2020/).

This collaborative project—conducted jointly with the Research Center for Environmental Changes (RCEC) at Academia Sinica—aims to improve the understanding and predictive capability of decadal climate variability, particularly over the Western Pacific and East Asian region.
The successful candidate will play a key role in designing and executing model experiments using TaiESM, analyzing initialized decadal prediction systems, and evaluating forecast skill across key physical climate variables. This research will contribute to advancing near-term prediction capacity and improving the understanding of predictability in the coupled Earth system.

Responsibilities

  • Design and perform decadal prediction experiments using TaiESM.
  • Analyze ensemble simulations and assess forecast skill for key variables (e.g., SST, precipitation, circulation).
  • Investigate the physical mechanisms that govern decadal predictability and forecast error.
  • Collaborate with researchers at NTU, Academia Sinica, and international partners.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at academic conferences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in climate science, atmospheric sciences, oceanography, or related fields.
  • Strong background in Earth system modeling, climate dynamics, or coupled model prediction.
  • Experience working with large climate datasets (e.g., model outputs, reanalyses, observations).
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., Python, NCL, Fortran) and data analysis.

How to apply

To apply, please send CV, including a list of publication to Prof. Yu-heng Tseng (tsengyh@ntu.edu.tw) with the subject line “Postdoc Application – Decadal Prediction”. The position will remain open until filled. We strongly encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds in the relevant fields and welcome international applicants.
