This faculty position is intended to bolster the University of Iowa’s historical strength in theoretical and experimental space physics and plasma physics. There are also opportunities to contribute to our departmental outreach efforts that include the active Hawk-Eyes on Science and Hawk-Eyes in Space outreach programs.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a theoretical/computational plasma physicist who is committed to the research, mentoring, and teaching missions of our department. The successful applicant is expected to develop a productive, visible, and well-funded research program with a research focus that is synergistic with departmental expertise in theoretical plasma physics with applications to space and astrophysical systems, experimental laboratory plasma physics, experimental space physics, or astrophysics. The position is targeted at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor, but strong applications at the rank of associate or full professor will be considered. Review of applications begins on 1 Oct 2025 and continues on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The position begins as early as Fall 2026, but a later start date may be accommodated.
Education Requirement:
A PhD in physics or closely related discipline.
Required Qualifications:
A record of scholarship in theoretical/computational plasma physics; a strong commitment to effective teaching and mentoring students; a strong potential to develop an internationally recognized research program; and excellent communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
Postdoctoral research experience in theoretical/computational plasma physics; a demonstrated ability to obtain external funding; student advising experience; and potential for research collaborations with the current faculty.
