Job description

Job Description
We are looking for a Project Researcher (II) or Postdoctoral Researcher who will engage in the “Earthquake Disaster Prevention Research Project for Damage Minimization and Rapid Response and Reconstruction from Great Earthquakes such as the Nankai Trough Earthquakes (FY2025-2029, PI: Takane Hori)” sponsored by MEXT.

[Research Description]
This research program aims to accelerate proactive measures against large-scale earthquake disasters, such as those from the Nankai Trough. The research will focus on refining three-dimensional subsurface structure models of the Nankai Trough region and improving the accuracy and precision of hypocenter determination. These efforts will also be extended to other regions, including the Japan Trench and the Kuril Trench.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in research that contributes to the advancement of studies on subsurface structures and seismic activity in subduction zones such as the Nankai Trough, the Japan Trench, and the Kuril Trench, based on computational and mathematical information science approaches, such as scientific machine learning. Potential research topics include, but are not limited to:

(1) Bayesian estimation of 3D velocity structure models using ocean-bottom seismometer data to characterize seismogenic zones.
(2) Development of efficient and scalable hypocenter determination tools that incorporate 3D velocity structure models through physics-informed deep learning.
