The Faroe Marine Research Institute is a small, but well-established governmental institute with a long tradition of ocean observation in the North Atlantic. The institute maintains strong collaborations with leading European and US oceanographic institutes. The institute has participated in several large EU projects and is currently partner in ObsSea4Clim and EPOC. The candidate will be based at the institute in Tórshavn, working alongside a diverse team of Faroese and international colleagues. Through project collaborators, the candidate will have the opportunity to develop a broader international network around ocean observations, modelling, climate variability and dynamics.

The position is part of the EU-project EPOC. The project team comprises 21 organizations across Europe, the United States and Canada. It is coordinated by Dr Eleanor Frajka-Williams at Universität Hamburg and runs from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2027. The overall methodology within EPOC relies on assessing the mechanisms and processes of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) as a function of timescale, latitude and region. The aim is to re-evaluate the variability of ocean transport and investigate how “conveyor-like” the global ocean conveyor is, by identifying processes that maintain or break connectivity, and by determining the timescales over which the AMOC switches from being driven by local processes to a more large-scale conveyor-like phenomenon.

The Faroe Marine Research Institute (HAV) has recently joined EPOC as a widening partner following a successful application to the European Commission. HAV has joined EPOC as part of the Hop-on facility with dedicated tasks focusing on exchanges across the Greenland-Scotland Ridge (GSR). The main objective of HAV’s contribution, and employment of the Post-doctoral candidate, is to strengthen EPOC’s capacity to understand the conveyor-like behavior of the global ocean conveyor in the GSR region, and to evaluate the performance of overflow simulations in the higher resolution models used within the EPOC project.

Job description

We offering Post-doctoral position in physical oceanography. The position is part of the EU-project EPOC (Explaining and Predicting the Ocean Conveyor) and will address Greenland-Scotland Ridge exchanges with a focus on Iceland-Faroe overflow and transport through the Faroe Bank Channel and Faroe-Shetland Channel.

The Post-doctoral researcher will join the oceanography group at the Faroe Marine Research Institute (HAV). The position involves analyzing oceanographic data from the Iceland-Scotland region, computing transport time series, and assessing different observational approaches to determine ocean transport in the region. Results will be presented and discussed with other partners in the EPOC project, and there will be opportunities to collaborate with project scientists working on e.g. observations and/or models.

The successful candidate will:

  • Collaborate with EPOC partners, particularly those involved in observations and modelling.
  • Contribute to project deliverables and both contribute to and lead scientific publications
  • Participate in fieldwork, including hydrographic cruises aboard a state-of-the-art research vessel R/V Jákup Sverri

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a motivated and collaborative candidate with a strong background in physical or mathematical sciences. The candidate should have

  • A Ph.D. in physical oceanography or closely related field
  • Strong computational skills, with experience in advanced data analysis and statistical methods
  • Proficiency in computer programming, ideally in MATLAB, Python or similar tools for scientific data analysis and visualisation
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and international team.

Starting Date will be mutually agreed with the successful candidate, preferably in autumn 2025.
