Job description

The Hydrology Research Group within the Dept. of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and the School of Natural Resources at the University of Missouri is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to provide programmatic, research- and outreach-related support for projects related to water resources management in the Mississippi River Basin in the United States.

The fellow will assemble and deploy advanced instrumentation to collect and analyze data, driving innovative research in environmental science, water resources engineering, and meteorology. Specifically, the fellow will leverage existing instruments and sensors to enhance rainfall-runoff modeling, flood inundation mapping, agricultural water demand forecasting, and pollution fate and transport studies. The hydrology lab is equipped with a 1m x 1m laboratory-scale rainfall simulator, a mobile weather radar, and various sensors for measuring weather, soil, and water (quantity and quality) parameters.

Research Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Fellow will lead innovative research on flood mitigation in sensitive wetland-lake ecosystems, flood inundation mapping and forecasting, and early warning systems for ungauged streams. Working collaboratively with lab members, the Fellow will integrate field data to test and validate ecosystem models, advancing environmental and water resources management.

Technical Support and Data Integration

The Fellow will support data integration efforts by developing and validating technologies for field research and instrumentation. This includes ensuring seamless integration of data from various sources to enhance research outcomes.

Scholarly Contributions

The Fellow will contribute to preparing research proposals, project reports, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, fostering impactful scientific communication.

Professional Development Opportunities

The Fellow will have opportunities to:

  • Engage in teaching, outreach, and career development activities.
  • Present research findings at national conferences.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, fostering the next generation of researchers.

The position is based at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, USA. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable for another year based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Applicants must have a PhD in hydrological sciences, civil / environmental / agricultural engineering, atmospheric science, meteorology, mathematics, physics, or related fields; experience in assessment of geospatial data to enhance biophysical process understanding, and to develop tools for decision making; experience in high performance computing and programming in Python, R or similar programming tools are required; and excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Applicants who possess MS degrees with a strong background of professional experience will also be considered.

How to apply

Application Instructions: Please email Noel Aloysius (aloysiusn@missouri.edu) a single PDF including the following:

  1. A letter of interest that briefly describes your educational and research background and as well as your research interests/goals (1-2 pages)
  2. A curriculum vitae that also includes, if applicable, TOEFL/IELTS English proficiency test scores
  3. Unofficial copies of graduate and undergraduate academic transcripts,
  4. Contact information of three professional references; one of them should be the candidate’s PhD advisor (referrers will not be contacted initially), and
  5. Copies of relevant publications and, if already completed, the abstract of PhD dissertation.

Please include “Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Hydrology” in the subject line. Review of applications will begin immediately. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for further details.
