Job description

Academia Sinica invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences (IES), with an anticipated start date of May 1, 2026.

The IES, established in 1982, is one of thirty-three institutes under Academia Sinica (AS), the premier research institution in Taiwan. The Institute is located in a dedicated six-story facility, with additional annexes, on the AS main campus in eastern Taipei. The current research staff comprises approximately 35 tenure-track scientists, supported by ~40 postdoctoral fellows, a technical engineering team, and professional administrative personnel. See more information on website: https://www.earth.sinica.edu.tw/.

IES conducts cutting-edge research in geophysics and geochemistry, addressing both regional and global geoscientific problems. In geophysics, the Institute has developed recognized strengths in seismology, tectonophysics, and, more recently, in geodesy, with an emphasis on GNSS and remote sensing for active tectonic studies. The Institute operates and maintains several regional-scale geophysical and geodetic monitoring networks across Taiwan and Southeast Asia. In geochemistry, the Institute houses state-of-the-art analytical facilities supporting research in isotope geochemistry, cosmochemistry, volcanology, orogenic processes, and crust-mantle evolution. IES fosters an interdisciplinary research environment and maintains strong collaborations with domestic and international institutions.

Qualifications

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Have a distinguished record of scientific achievement and scholarly publications in a relevant field (e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, geology, or a closely related discipline).
  • Be eligible for a senior-level research or faculty appointment within Academia Sinica.
  • Demonstrate proven leadership ability, with experience in academic or research administration.
  • Possess a clear vision for advancing the Institute’s research missions and promoting international collaborations.
