Qualifications:

Earned PhD hydrological sciences, civil / environmental / agricultural engineering, atmospheric science, meteorology, mathematics, physics, or related fields.

Position Overview

The Hydrology Research Group within the Dept. of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and the School of Natural Resources at the University of Missouri is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to provide programmatic, research- and outreach-related support for projects related to water resources management in the Mississippi River Basin in the United States.

The Fellow will lead and support projects involving field research, advanced instrumentation, data collection, and analysis to drive innovation in environmental science, water resources engineering, and meteorology. Responsibilities include assembling and deploying sensors and instruments in diverse environments to capture critical hydrological and meteorological data. Key research areas include:

• Rainfall–runoff modeling
• Flood inundation mapping and forecasting
• Agricultural water demand prediction
• Pollution fate and transport studies

Our lab facilities include a mobile weather radar, a 1m × 1m rainfall simulator, micro-irrigation study plots at the agricultural experimental station, and sensors for weather, soil, and water quality monitoring.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Fellow will lead innovative research on flood mitigation in sensitive wetland-lake ecosystems, flood inundation mapping and forecasting, and early warning systems for ungauged streams. Working collaboratively with lab members, the Fellow will integrate field data to test and validate ecosystem models, advancing environmental and water resources management.

Scholarly Contributions

The Fellow will contribute to preparing research proposals, project reports, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, fostering impactful scientific communication.

The position is based at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, USA. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable for another year based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Applicants must have a PhD in hydrological sciences, civil / environmental / agricultural engineering, atmospheric science, meteorology, mathematics, physics, or related fields; experience in assessment of geospatial data to enhance biophysical process understanding, and to develop tools for decision making; experience in high performance computing and programming in Python, R or similar programming tools are required; and excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
