Job description

PhD studentship in data assimilation methods for atmospheric dispersion models. Plumes of dispersing material in the atmosphere are typically characterized by small spatial extent and sharp gradients which make conventional data assimilation techniques used for weather forecasting models unsuitable. Instead this project will focus on methods such as nudging and particle filtering and applying these first to synthetic data (with data generated from large-eddy simulations or numerical weather prediction models) and then to more realistic cases. The successful student will be based at Imperial College but will work closely with the Met Office.
