PhD postion - Machine learning based assimilation of satellite data to improve air quality predictions
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH
Earth and Space Science Informatics (ESSI)
Nonlinear Processes in Geosciences (NP)
The PhD-project focuses on satellite data assimilation for air quality forecasts and analyses. It aims at leveraging limitations in the use of satellite observations by making a direct use of radiance observations retrieved by satellites using machine learning without the need of radiative transfer calculations. The new model will be developed using the example of the novel Earth Explorer EarthCARE and will be integrated as observation operator to the sophisticated data assimilation system of the EURopean Air pollution Dispersion – Inverse Model (EURAD-IM). The PhD-candidate will be mainly located at ICE-3, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, with intermediate stays at the Institute for Geophysics and Meteorology at the University of Cologne.
