EGU announces the 2025 Field Schools for Teachers and Geoscience Education Events awards
8 July 2025
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2024 Field Schools for Teachers and Geoscience Education Events awards. These awards, designed to support and enhance education in Earth, planetary, and space sciences, provide financial assistance to initiatives that promote geoscience learning at various educational levels.
This year EGU awarded four grants to recipients from four different countries. Brief summaries of the 2025 awarded Field Schools for Teachers and Geoscience Education Events are provided below:
Corinth Rift Laboratory (CRL) School (19-23/09/2025, Greece)
For about 30 years, the Gulf of Corinth in Greece has been the focus of multidisciplinary geophysical research by European teams. The Corinth Rift Laboratory (CRL) School is held annually in Nafpaktos and the University of Patras, with field activities and hands-on classes in various geophysical disciplines (seismology, geodesy, geophysics, tectonics and geology). Since 2016, the school has included site visits, geological studies, and educational activities for university students, secondary education teachers and pupils, featuring seismograph demonstrations and experiential learning.
2nd Iberian and Macaronesian Geodiversity Field School “Santa Maria island (Azores), where volcanoes and life forms are imprinted on the rocks” (16-19/10/2025, Spain)
This field school aims to raise awareness among primary and secondary teachers about the geology and geodiversity of Santa Maria Island. It focuses on volcanic evolution in the Macaronesian region, from the Canaries to the Azores. The programme includes field trips, lectures, and hands-on activities at the Casa dos Fósseis / Centro de Interpretação Ambiental Dalberto Pombo. It also fosters collaboration among teachers from Portugal, Spain, and across Europe, promoting the exchange of teaching practices on volcanism, fossils, and volcanic risks and opportunities.
Educational Mediterranean Observatory Teacher’s Workshop 2025 (20-22/10/2025, France)
The Educational Mediterranean Observatory Teacher’s Workshop 2025 aims to enhance the teaching of geosciences and sustainable development by connecting primary and secondary teachers with scientists, including researchers and PhD students. The workshop will cover seismology, meteorology, hydrogeology, and oceanography, addressing current social issues. It will feature scientific conferences, practical hands-on sessions led by Geoscience Education Field Officers from France and Italy, field trips, and a poster session. French and Italian teachers will participate, sharing diverse approaches to geoscience education and contributing to the development of an effective training programme.
ASVTS Field School (23-27/10/2025, Morocco)
The field school focuses on field-based learning by exploring two major Moroccan earthquake sites: the recent Al Haouz earthquake (M=7) on September 8, 2023, and the historical Agadir earthquake (M=5.9) on February 29, 1960. Participants will explore geological faults related to these earthquakes and analyse post-disaster management strategies for affected populations. The objective is to promote the observation of geoscientific phenomena on-site and to develop educational content to raise awareness about seismic risks among students and citizens.
