2025 call for EGU Geoscience Education Field Officers

30 September 2025

To build upon the success of last year’s programme, the EGU’s Education Committee is expanding the Geoscience Education Field Officers educational initiative to additional European countries. The primary role of the Field Officers will be to deliver professional development through interactive workshops for school teachers whose curriculum includes geoscience content.

In addition, Geoscience Education Field Officers will be expected to collect data from the workshops and promote the programme by giving lectures at national teachers’ conferences, as well as by writing and publishing abstracts and papers about their national activity. These are voluntary positions, but all related expenses will be covered.

Applicants must:

  • Hold a university degree in geoscience content.
  • Have extensive experience in teaching geoscience subjects (e.g. geology, science, geography) – either as an in service or retired teacher.
  • Be available for flexible work and are therefore unlikely to hold a full-time position.
  • Be willing to represent EGU among geoscience teachers and educators in their own country.
  • Be willing to liaise with a small group of EGU-recognised supporters in their own country.
  • Be open to exploring new teaching ideas and approaches.
  • Be willing to identify out and travel to relevant geoscience or primary education conferences in their country or region to deliver EGU interactive workshops in their native language.
  • Be prepared to attend a fully funded, two-day training course on delivering interactive workshops; this training will be provided by experienced professionals with expertise in curriculum-based, interactive CPD workshops across various countries.
  • Be willing, with guidance, to formulate EGU interactive workshops appropriate for the curriculum in their own countries (with or without translation from English).
  • Be willing to purchase locally all the apparatus and materials needed to support and maintain the workshops (expenses can be reclaimed).
  • Be committed to collecting evaluation data from each workshop and conducting basic data analysis.
  • Be willing to attend regular online meetings with the EGU Education Committee and the other Geoscience Education Field Officers, and provide a report on their activities.
  • Be willing to attend an expenses-paid biennial meeting of EGU Geoscience Education Field Officers and provide a report on their activities.

Applications should include the following:

  • a motivation letter (occupying no more than a single A4 page) in English. The motivation letter should refer to the motivation of the individual applying, the state of geoscience education in their country, and how the provision of interactive workshops to teachers is likely to have an impact.
  • a curriculum vitae (CV - occupying no more than four A4 pages) in English.

Please submit your application using the form here. The motivation letter should refer to the motivation of the individual applying, the state of geoscience education in their country, and how the provision of interactive workshops to teachers is likely to have an impact. We particularly encourage applications from people who are from under-represented communities in the sciences to get in touch, please contact us if you have any additional questions. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview by the selection panel.

Applications must be submitted by the end of the day 31 October 2025. If you have any questions, please contact EGU Education Committee Chair, Stavros Stathopoulos at education@egu.eu
