EGU EDI Committee looking for new members!
13 July 2026
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee promotes and supports equality, diversity and inclusion of opportunities in the Earth, planetary and space sciences, with a focus on EGU activities. The EDI Committee also works closely with the EGU Council, the Early Career Scientists and EDI Division Officer network, as well as representatives from sibling geoscience societies and EDI-related grass-root networks to raise awareness of the broad value of EDI within the scientific community.
The EDI Committee is seeking new volunteer members who will actively contribute to the implementation and promotion of EDI initiatives within the European Geosciences Union.
The prospective candidates should:
- Have a dedicated motivation to pursue EDI actions
- Demonstrate previous experience in promoting and/or implementing EDI initiatives within their workspace
- Demonstrate an awareness of the EGU EDI Committee: who we provide services to; what our values are; and the diversity of activities we are involved in
- Demonstrate a willingness and ability to work as part of a collaborative and diverse group of volunteers
- Indicate and understanding of the time that will need to be dedicated to the role
A previous involvement in EGU's structure in any role is an asset, but is not essential. Applicants will be evaluated according to the needs of the Committee. In particular, the EDI Committee aims to recruit at least one Early Career Scientist (ECS). Furthermore, the EDI Committee are currently seeking a volunteer to take on the role of EDI Committee Secretary, and another with experience organising webinars and short courses.
The position can be held for two years (renewable for two additional years) and is entirely voluntary based. Despite being a voluntary position, responsiveness, active participation and engagement in the EDI Committee are expected. Typically volunteer members are encouraged to attend and participate fully in the regular EDI Committee meetings (~6 virtual x 1.5 hr meetings per year), 1 in-person EDI Committee meeting in Europe (~1-1.5 days per year) and participate when possible to the EGU General Assembly and events organised by the EDI Committee (~1-2 hrs on each day of the EGU General Assembly).
Applications should include a motivation letter explaining how the applicant fits the profile outlined above (1 page) and a CV (2 pages). Applicants are expected to write their motivation letter themselves. AI tools may be used for language editing and proofreading, but not for generating the substantive content. We welcome applicants both from within and outside of Europe, and we especially encourage applicants from traditionally under-represented communities in the sciences. Applications must be written in English and should be submitted in a single pdf file, to the EDI Committee chair Lisa Wingate by the end of the day on the 10 August 2026.
For further information, please contact Lisa Wingate, the EDI Committee chair.
