"The overall interpretation of the results indicates that, in general, the shape of the combined seismic moment tensors at the plate boundary is oblate ( k <1), indicative of a predominance of transpressive deformation. As we move away from the plate boundary, the tensors become prolate in shape ( k >1), consistent with extensional context of the Pyrenees, the Valencia Trough, and the Central Basins.

President: Ana Bastos ( Email bg@egu.eu ) Deputy President: Lisa Wingate ( Email ) ECS Representative: Elsa Abs ( Email ecs-bg@egu.eu ) The Division on Biogeosciences integrates biological, chemical, and physical sciences dealing with processes and interactions within terrestrial and extraterrestrial realms through the current and earlier geological history of Earth and solar system in general. Its focus is beyond the established scientific approaches embracing multi- and interdisciplinary understandings of the biosphere functioning in space and time. In this division, we encourage the participation of scientists across different disciplines, including researchers from the field of applied biogeosciences as well as industrial professionals.

Although geophysical hazards are not expected to increase in frequency, earthquakes resulted in almost 19,000 deaths and losses of over EUR 29 billion in Europe alone. It is therefore necessary for governments to develop adaption and limitation strategies to reduce the humanitarian, economic and environmental impacts of these events.
