The concept of the PWS is to organise annual courses in different polar locations, which should rotate every year. Each of these locations is in the arctic but offers slightly different perspectives which helps to get deeper knowledge of arctic environments.

In addition to the GIFT workshops held during the General Assembly, the EGU organises education workshops elsewhere, usually in connection with international scientific conferences. Many of the EGU education activities are conducted in collaboration with the Outreach Committee.
Home / Awards & medals / Arne Richter Awards for Outstanding Early Career Scientists / 2026 / Francisco de Melo Viríssimo
His career exemplifies scientific versatility, creativity, and leadership, with contributions that have reshaped understanding across multiple fields. After completing a PhD in mathematics, De Melo Viríssimo redirected his expertise from computational mathematics to marine science at the National Oceanography Centre, in the UK. There, he made a transformative discovery on the role of seasonality in regulating the biological carbon pump, solving a long-standing puzzle in global biogeochemistry and clarifying its impact on carbon sequestration in the ocean.

Home / About EGU
The annual EGU General Assembly is the largest and most prominent European geosciences event, attracting over 21,000 scientists from all over the world in the year 2025. The meeting’s sessions cover a wide range of topics, including volcanology, planetary exploration, the Earth’s internal structure and atmosphere, climate, as well as energy and resources. The EGU was established in September 2002 as a merger of the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and the European Union of Geosciences (EUG), and has headquarters in Munich, Germany.
