The originality of the results lays in the use of an inert tracer gas (CF4) to isolate the effect of wind on soil gas transport and to assess the implication for chamber measurements.

That social geoscience theme remains a constant thread in her work, and it persists in her latest (2022) book, ‘Nomad Century’, which investigates how climate change will force us to change where – and how – we live. Like much her of her creative output, it is a book of solutions and a rousing call to arms, setting out how we can plan for and manage the now unavoidable climate migration while we restore the planet to a fully habitable state.

Her poster details the model numerics and shows how changing the magnitude of the volumetric water flux at the onset of Kamb Ice Stream affects its surface velocity. It was found that Kamb Ice Stream can either reach a stable state or can oscillate with periods of hundreds of years.

Using a combination of carbon and oxygen isotopes, this study showed the paleoenvironmental and paleoecological evolution of the Argentine Pampa during the Late Miocene and Early Pliocene. The study of bioapatite samples from eight fossil localities reflects changes in herbivore diets associated with changes in aridity and/or temperature.

Although these layers form 99% of Earth’s volume, studying them is no easy task. Dr Paula Koelemeijer, a seismologist at the University of Oxford, UK, uses seismic waves to ‘X-ray’ our planet, enabling her to build a picture of the structures that exist deep in the mantle and to interpret these in terms of the processes that have shaped our planet.
