The aim of her study is to obtain knowledge about magnesium silicate hydrate cement from nature that could be used in the development of environmentally friendly industrial cement. The cement forms when high pH, Mg-rich fluids that originate from the weathering of serpentinites react with quartz, which subsequently dissolves and is replaced by the cement.

Mojtaba Rajabi TS Tectonics and Structural Geology The 2022 Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award is awarded to Mojtaba Rajabi for outstanding research on global tectonic stress, that has resulted in a major revision of our understanding of present-day crustal stress patterns across different scales. Mojtaba Rajabi made exceptional contributions to the mapping of the Australian-Asian stress field and developed a comprehensive continental analysis that serves as a key reference for understanding the tectonic stress across spatial scales.

A key aspect of his research is to use river sediment flux archives to highlight how erosion evolves under a warming climate, especially in mountain environments exposed to increasing glacier melt and permafrost thaw. He introduced the 'Active contributing drainage area' concept and developed the 'Sediment-Availability-Transport' model to simulate sediment transport in cold regions.

The specific study presented at EGU23 focused on evaluating the effectiveness of seasonal forecasts from the ECMWF SEAS5 system in predicting rainfall droughts in East Africa and triggering corresponding actions. He showed that early actions can effectively reduce drought impacts in the region, especially ahead of the October-November-December (OND) season.

He received this award for his presentation on utilizing laboratory-based climate experiments to understand the seasonal influences of climate conditions on weathering processes in Turkish Badlands. His research is part of the project “A co-evolutionary modelling system for water-soil-vegetation interactions in Turkish semiarid landscapes for sustainable natural resources.”.
